passes. Theproject isdescribed
by theSuezCanal Authorityas “creatinganew
canal, parallel to theexistingone, tomaximize
benefit from thepresentCanal and itsby-
passes, anddouble the longest possibleparts
of thewaterway to facilitate traffic in the two
directions andminimize thewaiting time for
transiting ships.” Theproject is foreseen tohave
apositive impact onEgypt’snational income
as itwill boost thehardcurrencyearnings,
providemuchneeded jobopportunities and
thecreationof newurbancommunities.
Thenumber of averagedaily ships isexpected
to increase from thecurrent 49 to97 ships, as
for the revenuegeneration the increase is a
whopping$13.226billion from$5.3billionall
by theyear 2023. Thefirst trialwas completed
successfullyonJuly27
