28 A R T & C U LT U R E By: Ashraf Reda The Egyptian Art Scene is Bursting with Color and Creativity This Summer T his summer season has seen some of Zamalek’s preeminent galleries exhibit a cultured selection comprising many of Egypt’s leading contemporary artists and more is yet to come. Safarkhan Art Gallery, the country’s most distinguished purveyors and promoters of Egyptian art since 1968, offered art lovers another whirlwind year full of expertly curated works ranging from experimentally abstract contemporary works to the timeless allure of some of Egypt’s defining pioneers of art. Recently completed was their inventive and complementary exhibition for Alexandrian sculpting duo Sarkis Toosonian and Alfons Louis, whose majestic compositions out of metal and wood respectively were exhibited side-by-side in tasteful synchronization and drew widespread national acclaim. Safarkhan will cap off another successful and eventful season with a second edition of their popular ‘Art Your Wall’ season-in-review collection, a comprehensive exhibition showcasing powerful combination of best of this year’s talent from established contemporaries and modern masters. With a continuation of their cultivated overarching theme of bridging the past and present through disparate yet harmonizing local art forms, some of the enthralling works this exhibition will feature in tandem include; Ibrahim Khatab, Ahmed Farid, Karim Abd El Malak along with rare selections from pioneers Inji Efflatoun, Salah Abdel Kerim, Kamal Khalifa, Youssef Sida and posthumous showings of Ramzi Moustafa’s emotive canvases.
