8 H I S T O R Y trunk over ground littered with fig leaves, is the devil who is represented in his traditionally anthropomorphic style (half-man and half-goat), giving the statue a striking and eerie quality. His expression and motion, although appearing playful, is that of mischief and deception. The statue perfectly captures such devilish characteristics, and is symbolized by him clutching the goat’s tail from behind its back, as the unwitting animal turns in curiosity. It is also symbolic of the merging of man and beast as they circle around the tree and are conjoined physically by hand and tail, suggesting the cycle of transformation from where the devil becomes the half-man and half-goat, known as the Baphomet, which he is traditionally depicted as. The antique clock mount, which is the first ever Arabic numerical clock in the world, has long been a fixture of the Eugenie ballroom and is a wonderfully ornate clock that stands 30 centimeters high and with a base length of 90 centimeters. The clock, still in excellent condition, is crafted in polished brass in characteristic 19 th century style, and stands on a decorated base consisting of six circular legs embellished with ornate carvings of ribbons and leaves. The main body of the clock itself is fashioned in the style of a warship, with protruding masts flanking either side of the clock. The hull of the warship is armored with various shields, decorated with embossed vine and leaf motifs, which wrap around structure and are viewable from all angles. A rifle, dagger, cannon, swords, spears and a quiver are also all present towards the top of the clock, flanking the clock face on either side, and are fashioned in a three-dimensional way so as to also be viewable from all angles. The clock face itself is positioned in the center of the naval vessel, on a rounded base on a metal column, on which the growth of vine leaves finds its way about and around.
